Safe Sex: Coronavirus & Contraception

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are self-quarantined and confined to our homes with our loved ones. Now is the perfect time for some sexual exploration!

While we’re all reinforcing the importance of thorough hand washing and social distancing practices, let’s be sure to be safe sexually and use protective and contraceptive measures to prevent unwanted babies and the spread of any other infectious diseases.

Below are a few ways to practice safe sexual exploration during these difficult times that you may not have considered:

Internal Condoms

Internal condoms (aka female condoms) are a great way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy while still enjoying the sensation of penetrative sex . They can be worn internally to cover the vagina, anus, and even parts of the vulva. Check out this how-to guide on using internal condoms from Avert.

While traditional condoms are fine, you may be surprised to discover that internal condoms are latex-free, 95% effective and have a lower instance of breaking than traditional external (aka male) condoms.

Outercourse

Outercourse or non-penetrative sex is a great way to have safer sex with less risk of unwanted pregnancy. Outercourse can consist of kissing, touching, and caressing erogenous zones and other parts of the body for sexual pleasure. Mutual masturbation and oral sex are also wonderful ways to explore sexual pleasure through outercourse. To ensure the utmost safety, be sure to use a barrier method like a dental dam to prevent disease if you or your partner are unsure of your status. Dental dams can be used to cover the anus, vulva, nipples, etc. to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted disease.

Cabin fever can be maddening and sex is a healthy stress reliever. We hope these tips help you through this difficult time.
